About Woolley Wood

Woolley Wood School is a primary community special school for children with severe and complex learning difficulties and disabilities.  In June 2009, the school was judged as Outstanding by Ofsted.

The school teaches pupils aged from 2 to 11 years with 71 pupils on roll.  The number of pupils in each class is small with high staffing levels ensuring pupils receive the level  of attention they require for their educational and care needs.

Pupils aged 2 to 5 years are taught in the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes); there are five other classes for pupils aged 5 to 11. There are 14 pupils attending each session in the Foundation Stage with 1 teacher and 4/5 teaching assistants.  In classes 1-6, there is 1 teacher and 2/3 teaching assistants teaching classes with 7-9 pupils.

All our teachers have mainstream qualifications as well as additional special training to work with children with special needs. Meeting the needs of pupils is complex and teachers are advised and supported by a number of other professionals from a variety of agencies.

Strong lines of communication between parents and school staff is very important and parents are actively encouraged to come into school and are made very welcome. The current school is fortunate to have some fantastic facilities enabling staff to provide children with exceptional provision, including a hydrotherapy swimming pool which is highly utilised both in school time and by the wider community. Our new facilities will be a step further forward.

The curriculum is broad and enriched. Each pupil has an individual special educational need – and no two pupils are the same. Using the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum, a creative and fun curriculum has been developed enabling children to enjoy their education and make the best possible progress.

Woolley Wood has a strong commitment to working closely with mainstream schools and is a very active member of the Yewlands Family of Schools.  The other schools within the family are Yewlands Technology College, Foxhill Primary School, Monteney Primary School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Grenoside Primary School and Mansel Primary School.  The schools work together to focus on excellence within all areas of education.
